Our House Remodeling Project

Recently, my husband and I took a big leap and bought a house. It is a decent size house with a huge yard. Although neither of us had ever been in the house before, we got excited when we found out it was being sold. We have lived across the street from this house for about two years now and have always thought it was a cute house with great potential. The woman that owned it had updated the outside of the house including new siding, windows, doors and the roof.
When we first looked at the house we lost a lot of our excitement. It is an older home and had not been updated on the inside. We could see the potential the house had, but weren't sure we were up for the work of remodeling a house. We thought about it for a while then kind of let the idea go. That is, until we heard the price had dropped. So, we went through the house again and decided we would buy it. We got it at a great price so we just couldn't pass it up!
I decided to start a series and share our house remodeling process with all of you. So, be on the lookout for future posts about what we are doing next in the house.
How much is too much?
One of the first places we started was in the yard. It was winter when we bought the house so we worked weather permitting. There were lots of things that needed cleaned up around the house. These pictures are from Google Earth. They are from last year, before we owned the house.
As you can see from the pictures above, the previous owner had A LOT of stuff planted in the yard. This picture actually doesn't even show everything that was planted in the yard. Some of the flowers had not come up yet. There were things just here and there all over the yard in no particular order. There was an old fence separating the two lots that was surrounded by different types of plants, bushes and vines. We have removed the fence and the majority of the plants, bushes and vines. Also gone are a lot of the different bushes and flowers that were in the yard.
In the picture below, you can see how much better it looks without the fence in the middle of the yard. This picture was taken before some of the plants came up this past spring, but you can get an idea of how much is gone. We also had a walnut tree cut down in the back yard.
We absolutely LOVE our yard! It still needs some work, but it is coming along nicely. It not only provides our kids with a great area to play in, it also provides us with space to grow our own food. Thanks to the previous owner, we currently have 4 fruit trees, blackberry and raspberry patches, and a good size garden plot. My husband and I have never had a garden before, so we are learning as we go.
Do you have any experience with remodeling? I'd love to hear about your projects!
